Sail Training

1194943 orig

TSC understands the importance of sail training, both for the success of the sport and of our club. We have a committed team of sail trainers, made up of qualified instructors and experienced and enthusiastic helpers. We are a RYA Training Centre.

Sail training at TSC breaks down into 2 core activities.

Sail Training - RYA Level 1 & 2

Each Spring, we run a combined RYA Level 1 & 2 course, putting up to 30 people through their paces in Bristol Harbour. The course is the industry standard and gives new sailors the core skills they need to get on the water.

  • Level 1 - able to sail in light winds under supervision: how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering.
  • Level 2 able to sail and make decisions in good conditions: rigging, launching, sailing in all directions.
  • Capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge.

TSC runs Sail Training over 5 sessions:

Shorebased Session at TSC: Shorebased activities to prepare the students for the practical sessions.

Practical Sessions 1&2: Full day at All Aboard Watersports in Bristol Docks to cover the RYA Level 1 Syllabus.

Practical Sessions 3&4: Full Day at All Aboard Waterspouts in Bristol Docks to cover the RYA Level 2 Syllabus.

All courses follow the relevant RYA syllabus (Adult and Youth) and are led by volunteer club members who are all qualified RYA Instructors. Students must attend all sessions and must be members of TSC. You can find out more about joining the club here.

On-going Sailing Development

The Challenge Series is central to our on-going sailing development and has an emphasis on participation, building friendships and having a good time. It is open to all members and aims to:

1. integrate new members and recently joined members with the more established sailors at TSC.

2. develop core sailing skills, boat set-up and knowledge of local conditions,

3. allow novice and intermediate sailors and racers to develop and hone their racing skills, acting as a step between recreational sailing and racing.

4. give all members the opportunity to broaden their experience, sailing different types of dinghy with different people.

In 2024, Challenge will run throughout the season and will have 2 main elements: Challenge: Development will focus on improving our sailing knowledge and skills, while Challenge: Racing will provide a supported environment to help new and less experienced racers learn and get up to speed!

It's a great way for all members to get to more involved in the club, as it gives you the opportunity to mix with different people doing the thing that brings us all together. Click here to read more.
