Get into sailing
Thinking of getting into sailing? You're in the right place.
The Thornbury Sailing Club runs a "Get into Sailing" programme, which gives you the perfect route from complete beginner to capable sailor, without the need to go through a membership application process or commit to full-time membership.
The programme includes:
- 3 month trial membership of TSC (1 April to 30 June)
- RYA Level 1 & 2 course in Bristol Harbour (dates below - you need to attend all sessions to get your certificate)
- 6 x Challenge: Development improver sessions at TSC on the River Severn (dates below - optional)
- Access to club boat hire and full sailing calendar
- .Waiver of £60 joining fee for full membership at the end of the trial membership period

RYA Level 1 & 2 Course
RYA Level 1 & 2 is the industry standard course for new sailors, giving you the core skills you need to get on the water:
- Level 1 you will be able to sail in light winds under supervision: how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering.
- Level 2 you will be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions: rigging, launching, sailing in all directions, capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge.
Challenge: Development
The Challenge Series is central to our on-going sailing development and has an emphasis on participation, building friendships and having a good time. It is open to all members and aims to put sailor improvement at the centre of our activity. It aims to support our new RYA Level 2 sailors, as they progress from the basics to confident and capable sailors at TSC.
The series runs throughout the season and has 2 main elements: Challenge: Development will focus on improving our sailing knowledge and skills, and Challenge: Racing will provide a supported environment to help new and less experienced racers learn and get up to speed!
If you join our "Get into Sailing" programme, you will be invited to participate in the 6 development sessions that run while you are a member. These sessions cover much of the content from the RYA's Better Sailing course.
Your sailing future
When you have completed the trial programme, you will be invited to join the club as a full member. Membership is great value, adult membership is £130 and family membership is £140. Of course, if you prefer, you can apply to join now and do the RYA Course as a member for only £130.
As a member, you will be able to hire club boats, which costs between £5 and £10 a day, and participate in our year round sailing calendar. Click here to find out more about How to Join.
