Commodore's Letter - Martin Clapham

The river Severn is a wonderful playground and TSC provides an excellent base to explore it. As I commence my term as Commodore these indisputable facts will guide me. Looking back over the last few years and the challenges that have arisen due to COVID-19 the importance of TSC to so many of us has been amplified. Clearly there were times when the sailing club and its facilities had to remain shut, sailing and social events were disrupted by government-imposed lockdowns. However, as soon as the restrictions were eased, we sprang back into life. Perhaps our period of dormancy served to remind us just how much we enjoy the simple rituals of sailing in such a tranquil place. Whatever primal urge draws us to the river, I feel that it has been strengthened by our enforced absence.
This feeling is supported by the observation that as soon as sailing was permitted the number of boats on the water seemed larger than ever before. The fact that the clubhouse itself remained closed and that racing was not possible did not deter our members from getting out on the water. We learned to enjoy the river in new and different ways that are sometimes overlooked when the focus is racing around the cans. Groups of dinghies were seen cruising up and down river to explore places that are typically only visited by the cruiser fleet. As soon as camping was allowed, there was a similar level of enthusiasm for the simple pleasure of sleeping under canvas, gazing up at the stars, and gathering with friends around a camp fire.
Another welcome development is the large number of new members that have joined the club. Perhaps inspired by the beauty of our location and the irresistible sense of fun that defines our club. During a time when travel was restricted finding such a gem on our doorstep is very welcome.
As we look ahead to the coming season I am confident that our club will continue to go from strength to strength. We have several social events planned including the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in early June. The sailing programme is available on the website and thanks to the sailing secretary and the sail training coordinator, we have a wealth of sailing activities in store. All of the regular events are there and will be supplemented by some new ones aimed at increasing the participation and enjoyment of sailing. Please take a look and get involved wherever you can.
