The NEW Challenge Series

The Sailing Committee is very excited to launch the Challenge Series this year. The series is a new concept, which we hope will offer all members a great opportunity to sail together outside the established racing calendar. While the focus will be on improving our sailing, in terms of sailing skills, boat set-up and local conditions, the key to success will be social, with an emphasis on building friendships and having a good time.

The series runs on 9 Saturdays and one Sunday from May to October. Each event will focus on an aspect of sailing (for example, tides, gybing or race starts) and will involve: a briefing with some technical input; a race or races designed to put those ideas into practice; a debrief; and a sojourn to the bar for a drink and a bite to each. We expect the après-sailing will be well attended and plan to run some events to help that along.

The plan for the sailing is for the more experienced participants to act as mentors to the less experienced whether that experience is knowledge of the club, the river or sailing technique. We will strongly encourage people to mix up, with double handers being crewed by mentors who can guide their helm and single handers being grouped with mentors on the water to take a lead and give advice.

The OOD's job will come up with best programme for the day, based on who is there, what boats they want to sail and the conditions on the day. They will help set up the mentor pairings and take the lead in briefings, bringing in experts for the day where appropriate. Each day will be free-standing in terms prizes, with awards such as most improved and most helpful, as well as winning.

We very much hope that this appeals to all of you and we know that it's success will depend on as many people as possible turning up and getting stuck in. So please put Saturday 14th May in your diary and we'll look forward to seeing you there.

Sailing Secretary
