Laying Up Supper
Laying up Supper
This tradition began in the 1950's when, prior to the erection of the penstocks, the flotation chambers of the floating jetty were removed and floated to the head of the Pill where they were beached and sailing was laid up for the winter.
In those days, fancy dress to a theme was mandatory and a fine was levied on those who arrived at the supper in normal clothes. This was donated to the RNLI. Some costumes were fantastic and many amazing photos of these are still in circulation. Attendance at one such supper topped 90.
The supper was followed by a pantomime produced, directed and performed by TSC members. Our Commodore and Vice Commodore well remember a scene involving them transforming into River Severn channel buoys. Oh yes they did!
