First Aid Course

15th February, 08:30 - 17:00

The First Aid course is a one day course which includes maritime elements. It is available to all members and is free of charge - we just ask you to put your hand up if there is an incident at the club which would benefit from your first aid skills. The course covers the required elements for RYA instructors, who will be given priority in the event that the course is over-subscribed.

This Level 3 Outdoor Pursuit First Aid 8 Hour course is designed for people who spend time in outdoor environments, whether in a professional or a leisure capacity. The focus is on recognising a medical emergency and first responder actions.

It meets the needs of outdoor activity instructors, teachers or leaders, operating in locations with close access to further support, and it perfectly suited to First Aiders at TSC.

The course covers:

  • Roles and responsibilities for first aiders
  • Incident management
  • ABC primary survey
  • Summoning appropriate help/rescue services
  • Treatment for unconscious casualties
  • Treatment for non-breathing casualties
  • Use of an AED
  • Treatment for bleeding/shock
  • Recognition and management of life-threatening illness
  • Recognition and management of drowning/hypothermia
  • Insulation and shelter
  • Age awareness for vital signs/CPR/bleeding
  • Ongoing monitoring and casualty care whilst awaiting help

The content of this course is matched to the IOL statement of Good Practice on Outdoor First Aid at Band 3.
