Adult Beginners Courses
During the first half of the sailing season the club runs an adult beginners course for our members. The course provides an excellent introduction to sailing and no previous experience is necessary. It is open to adults (16+) and training is usually carried out in the clubs double handed Wayfarer, Wanderer or GP 14 sailing dinghies.
The course syllabus is:
RYA Start Sailing (Level 1) which covers how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering. After this course a student will be able to sail in light winds under supervision.
RYA Basic Skills (Level 2) which covers rigging, launching, sailing in all directions, capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge. After this course you will be able to sail and make decisions in good conditions.

TSC Adult Beginner Course
The course is run over eight sessions. The first two are at an inland venue and the others are held at Thornbury Sailing Club on the River Severn. Adult beginner courses usually use double handed sailing dinghies.
A shore day is held a couple of weeks before starting the course to familiarise students with the training boats, introduce the instructors, give some advice on what to wear for sailing and answer any questions you may have.
The club runs the adult beginner course for the benefit of its members so to participate in the course students must meet the following requirements:
- Students must be full or family members of Thornbury Sailing Club
- a health and emergency contact information form must be completed.
The fee for the adult beginner's course is £95 which must be paid to confirm the booking (for members of Thornbury Sailing Club).
