2011 Questionnaire update

Dear All

We have received 38 completed questionnaires so far and have begun to analyse the responses for a report to the committee.

Talking with various members yesterday it became apparent that several still wished to respond, so we have set a deadline of next weekend, specifically the end of sailing next Sunday 19th June for responses to be sent and included in the full analysis and report for the committee.

The easiest way to respond is by e-mail to geoff.crocker @ 3wa.co.uk but hard copies will be available in the club house today for members wishing to post their response to Geoff Crocker.

Many thanks

Geoff, Gary and Linda

2011 Questionair

Why a questionnaire? - download the questionnaire here

We have decided to send this questionnaire to members after looking at the club's dinghy sailing fleets over the last year. The data shows that whilst good numbers of boats continue to sail in the long distance and pursuit races, there has been quite a sharp decline in other series, so that sometimes less than 5 boats sail in the 'fast' fleet and less than 10 boats in the 'slow' fleet. There has been a good level of discussion about this by e-mail recently and also at the club meeting on 7 April.

Given that our membership now stands at 248, even allowing for the good number of members who sail cruisers, our dinghy sailing fleets represent a low percentage of our membership. We decided it was a good idea to ask why this might be - hence the questionnaire.

Whilst doing this, we also thought that it would be an opportunity to consult members on other points about the club, and to invite more general responses from members.

Please complete the questionnaire and return it either by e-mail to geoff.crocker @ 3wa.co.uk or by mail to Geoff at 12 Hope Square, Bristol, BS8 4LX, or to a member of the committee at a club event. The questionnaire is anonymous to allow totally free expression of points of view, but you can add your name if you'd like to communicate more directly.

We promise that all responses will be carefully considered, and that a summary of the responses will be published and made available to all members.

Thanks

Your committee May 2011

Tide Height in Arrowsmith Tide Tables

Tide Tables.Mike Johnson recently sent the following important information about changes in the Arrowsmiths Tide Tables.

I am quite sure that many of your members will by now have cottoned on to the fact that the Arrowsmiths Tide Tables for this year are related to Chart Datum throughout. Regrettably, this includes the predictions for Sharpness. We are all used to seeing the Sharpness predictions relative to dock sill height and some members may use the predictions as a guide to when they may be able to get on or off moorings, and into/out of the Pill. If members have been using the data in the tables for this purpose (or for estimating on which tides it will be possible to safely cross the sands or race in certain areas) they must now remember that the heights given for Sharpness in this years tables are related to Chart Datum Sharpness (1.83m below OD) rather than Sharpness Sill (1.33m below OD). Thus for this year we must remember to subtract 0.5m from the predicted heights for Sharpness if you wish to relate those predictions to sill level. I have suggested to Arrowsmiths that the tables for next year should revert to the traditional relationship to Sharpness sill.

Working Party 25th Nov

Thank you to all those members who have made a tremendous effort on the two recent working parties held on 14th Oct and 24th Nov. We planned a tyre wall as a precursur to protecting the flood bank. What we have done is more than I expected. Special thanks to Norman Knapp who has provided about 600 tyres, Paul Chapman for about another 200. To Sue, Angela and Joan for providing coffee and bacon rolls. Very much appreciated. To date we have driven in 220 stakes (with the aid of a JCB) and consumed all these tyres plus a few more which I obtained from Ebley Tyres in Thornbury. We still have to finish it off, which will entail placement of tyres only. Sometime in the New Year in between the winter cruiser series at dates to be decided.

Regards, Barry

Working Party 7th October

That was a marvellous Working Party; we achieved so much more than I had dared to hope. A Big Thank You to all who came to help. We have created some highly desirable spaces close to the main gate; so if you sail very regularly and want one of them let me know. We have moved some dinghies, with care, so do check your boats.

For the sake of those who cut the grass can you use those screw-in dog posts or wooden posts left at least a foot above ground to secure your boats-

NOT HORRIBLE BITS OF IRON!

Sally began painting numbers on posts (and on her jeans and her trainers and her hands ) so we should get the main area numbered shortly. We did make a start on the trailer compound and it is much more spacious without all the undergrowth. Agood bonfire has removed the wood rubbish but we must ask members to cut up and dispose of their own 'dead' fibreglass boats asap. The next big push will be to widen the alley for the cats and also widen the bends but they need respacing too. I will need the cat sailors help for that. We can fix a date when Barry has got his post and tyre wall up.

See you then, Joan Booys
